I got my first paying job when I was 17. I spent my first tax refund on a four-track cassette recorder, a Yamaha MT3X, and soon after got an Akai XR-10 drum machine.

Immediately, I started recording these songs, with a little help from some friends.

At the time, there was still a few really cool independent record stores around Minneapolis, as well as a decently supportive music scene, which meant that people used to actually try out new music that hadn't been spoon fed to them by ClearChannel. So I used to make half-hour cassette tapes of this sort of material, place it on consignment at Northern Lights, and actually sell most of them.

The first one sold out, except for a few copies. The second one not so much. And the third, well, even though it got better reviews, by then the scene was suffering, record stores did not do consignments, and well...

But, still, at $3.50 each (my share of the consignment) I did end up recouping the cost of my first recording studio. Or would have, had I not spent the money on more equipment.
